South Carolina Joins List of States with E-waste Laws

South Carolina joined the ranks of states that have electronics waste laws on the books May 19, 2010. Governor Mark Sanford (R) signed the law which requires manufacturers to have take back programs in place by 2012.

Covered devices are banned from landfills beginning July 1, 2011. Manufacturers will have to label covered devices, post notices on their websites for how to recycle the e-waste, and declare the method of take back to be employed. Television manufacturers are also subject to market share requirements.

Covered items include televisions, desktop or notebook computer, computer monitor, and printers. The law does not require manufacturers to pay a fee or register.

The full law is available at http://www.scstatehouse.gov/sess118_2009-2010/bills/4093.htm
